Ada County Courthouse Elopements
Thinking about eloping at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise? You’re not alone! Courthouse weddings are an intimate, stress-free way to tie the knot, and they’re perfect for couples who want to keep things simple while still making it special. We recently had the honor of capturing Bre and Josh’s courthouse elopement, and we’re sharing everything you need to know about saying “I do” at the Ada County Courthouse—including how to get your marriage license, secure a judge, and plan a beautiful photo session afterward!
Step 1: Apply for Your Marriage License
Before you can get married at the courthouse, you’ll need to apply for a marriage license through Ada County. Here’s what you need to know:
- Both partners must appear in person at the Ada County Recorder’s Office.
- Bring valid photo identification (driver’s license, passport, or military ID).
- The marriage license fee is $30, payable by cash, check, or card.
- No waiting period! Once you receive your license, you can get married the same day.
- The license is valid for one year, so you have flexibility in choosing your date.
Step 2: Secure a Judge for Your Ceremony
To have a judge officiate your ceremony, you’ll need to schedule your wedding through the Fourth Judicial District Court. Here’s how it works:
- Contact the courthouse in advance to check availability and schedule your ceremony. It’s best to plan at least a few weeks ahead to secure your preferred date.
- Fees vary but expect to pay around $100-$150 for the judge’s services.
- Some judges may allow a short personalized ceremony, while others keep it brief and simple—be sure to ask when scheduling!
Step 3: Can You Bring Guests?
Yes! While courthouse weddings are often small, you can bring a few guests to witness your ceremony. Most couples invite their closest family and friends. However, space inside the Ada County Courthouse is limited, so check with the court to confirm how many people can attend.
Step 4: Plan for Photography Restrictions & Portraits
Photos during your wedding inside the courthouse are at the discretion of the judge, so make sure to check in with your judge. Bre and Josh's judge recommended they get married at the Water Building next door to keep it simple. Afterward, we captured their beautiful newlywed portraits outside the courthouse, which offers a stunning backdrop with its clean architecture and classic Boise charm.
If you’re eloping at the courthouse, here are some photo-friendly options to consider:
- Bridal portraits outside the Ada County Courthouse – A classic and elegant backdrop.
- Boise Capital Building – The capital building has beautiful marble floors and white beams inside with a outdoor backdrop as well
- Julia Davis Park – For a more outdoorsy vibe, with greenery and a pond.
How Much Does It Cost to Elope at the Courthouse?
Eloping at the Ada County Courthouse is one of the most budget-friendly ways to get married. Here’s a general breakdown of the costs:
- Marriage license: $30
- Judge’s fee: $100-$150
- Photography (optional, but highly recommended!): Varies depending on your needs
- Total cost: Around $130-$180 (plus any additional vendor costs you choose!)
Bre & Josh’s Courthouse Elopement
Bre and Josh kept their wedding day simple, intimate, and full of love. They exchanged vows in the Water Building with just the two of them, and after the ceremony, we took portraits outside the courthouse to document their newlywed glow. Their day was a perfect example of how courthouse elopements can be just as special and meaningful as a traditional wedding!
